Management of Diabetes: The Disease, Medications and Clinical Management

Diabetes is a complex disease with many associated comorbid conditions such as heart disease, renal disease, neuropathy and even blindness. With knowledge gained from this course, pharmacists will have an understanding of the disease, the diagnostic guidelines, the possible complications, and pharmacotherapeutic interventions. Step-by-step the learner will work through the standard of care for taking a patient history and comprehensive evaluation, identifying gaps in therapy, and making recommendations to the collaborating health care team to optimize medication management for patients with diabetes and to refer patients for specialist care. Learners are strongly encouraged to enroll in the P3 Process of Care: Comprehensive Medication Therapy Management course.



Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the clinical parameters for diagnosis GD, Type 1 and 2, and pre-diabetes;
  2. Describe the treatment options for the management of diabetes;
  3. Given a patient with diabetes develop a non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment plan;
  4. Identify strategies to improve medication use in patients with diabetes and promote patient self-management; and
  5. List opportunities for pharmacists in the management of diabetes.
